This is our largest project to date. A custom mobile altar set made primarily of solid American Black Walnut. The specifics of this project are hard to explain as it took months of design, planning and redesign to get this final masterpiece. This was commissioned by a new Catholic school, and they wanted a “legacy piece” to be a benchmark of their new school. The school was still in a temporary location and sharing the space with another church on the weekends, so they needed to be able to take everything down and store it every week. This massive altar set is about 9ft tall and 11ft wide when set up! This is the part that is challenging to explain in writing. The set is made of 3 pieces- the altar, the backdrop and what we’ll call the base. All of it was made to be able to fit together and be stored away- the backdrop has doors that close and then the entire backdrop can be lifted out and fits into a ledge on the back of the base unit, the altar can then be rolled inside of the opening on front of the base unit.

What an honor to know that the holy sacrifice of the Mass is being celebrated and offered up on an altar that I built. It was definitely a different experience building this altar set, not only because of the shear scope of work on the largest project I’ve built but the attitude and prayer that went into building something that I hope and pray can be something that brings people closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Behind the Scenes
Here is a behind the scenes look at how the backdrop of the altar worked. The frame and panel construction is built with steel tubing running through the frame of the backdrop that fit into holes in the top and back ledge of the base unit. When the altar set is ready to be stored away, as this one is every week, you simply close the doors and lift the backdrop out of the top and insert it in the holes that are located on a ledge on the back of the base unit.
